Needle stick in the ER

Posted: April 1, 2011

A worker was assisting an emergency-room physician to insert an intravenous needle in a patient who was unstable and had already removed numerous previous intravenous devices. The patient was also actively seizuring at the time of the intravenous initiation and the primary focus was on securing the intravenous site to ensure that the necessary medications could be administered. The physician withdrew the needle before activating the safety device. As the worker activated the saline lock, one of the worker's fingers sustained a needle stick injury.
